Artist Profile

Elizabeth A. Emery

“As beautiful as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissection table.”
Surrealist poet, Comte de Lautreamont

My work is not about creating a linear narrative. Instead, the slip cast forms and artifacts provide a stream of consciousness-like exploration of thoughts, of emotions, of the past and the future. These sculptures, therefore, become a visual manifestation of mental truths and the memories we collect of people and places - complete with uncanny juxtapositions, confusion, instability, and a fear of the unknown.

Much of this work is also informed by the universal obsession with collecting. It questions whether the objects we accumulate offer insight into our own identity and our need to control both actual and perceived chaos.
