Artist Profile
Laurel Jay Carpenter
As a performance and installation artist, I am compelled by my surroundings: the place, the season, the materials at hand. In fact, I am intrigued by mundane, seemingly ordinary things and common tasks.
With my work I attempt to affix the fleeting, to hold place and suspend time. The performances, especially, make real what is ethereal, seeking grounding through transformation. I conjure a kind of quiet alchemy by imprinting the space, moment by moment, hour after hour, with repetitive and focused deeds. In my work, in every way, I seek the magic of being richly and intensely present.
