Artist Profile

Crystal Whitley

Graduating from VCU in 1998, I majored in English but took a lot of classes in the art department and have always loved creating things and all forms of artistic expression. My preferred medium is acrylic on canvas and my style is slightly cartoonish with an illustrative element. I like simplicity in style, using bold colors and find that nature never disappoints. My paintings are playful, yet deep, and show my passion and love for nature and often express a mood or emotion that is indicative of a certain period in my life. In 2005, I received a Master's of Education in school counseling and have worked in the school systems for 6 years, having taught 8th and 9th grade English, 11th and 12th grade psychology, and have worked for the past 4 years as a school counselor in both the public and private sectors. I find art to be an extension of self-reflection/introspection and extremely meditational and therapeutic. I am currently working on applying for a PhD in counseling. I hope to one day become certified as an art therapist.

Relationship to P2

While attending VCU, I took several classes in both the art and film departments and came to know many artists, becoming a part of the Richmond art scene. I spent a lot of time at Red Zero and Patrick is one that I'll never forget. I think everyone knew Patrick. Always outspoken and "a man about town" he was always pushing the envelope and testing limits and boundaries. There was never a dull moment when Patrick was around. He made everyone feel welcome and at ease. He loved the ladies and appreciated female beauty as well as the female brain. He was an innovative mind and will truly be missed. I am sorry for the loss felt by his family and friends.
